Choose a local model for a 16 GB Mac

LEARN / LOCAL AI Sources checked

For a 16 GB Mac, start by testing a small instruction-tuned model with a supported quantization and modest context. Hugging Bay screens weight files at 60% of RAM, or 9.6 GB for 16 GB; this is a shortlist rule, not measured fit or a quality ranking.

Compare starting points

There is no single best model for every 16 GB Mac. Choose a task and test the same prompts on each candidate. These are examples to inspect, not benchmark winners or confirmed Hugging Bay downloads.

Use the file size, then test

The 9.6 GB screen applies to the selected weight files in decimal GB. Leave memory for macOS, other apps, the runner and its context cache. On Apple silicon the CPU and GPU share memory, so do not add the same memory twice. A model under the screen can still fail to load.

Open hardware pages or Finder to inspect current files. Compare Llama GGUF records with Qwen GGUF records, then use Compare for the exact records. Download availability can change.

Check your Mac and context

Follow the Mac setup guide to identify your chip and choose a supported app. LM Studio currently lists Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer; Intel support differs by runner. Keep the first test short. Increasing context increases memory use, so a successful short chat does not prove a long document will fit. Record the exact file, quantization, runner and context when comparing results.
