Pick a model for my computer
How do I pick a model file that fits my computer?
It depends on your available memory, task, runtime and license. Compare the size of one exact weight file with your working memory; leave room for the operating system and other apps. Check that the format is supported and that the file is currently hosted. A size fit is an estimate, not proof of a successful run.
RAM is working memory used while a model runs; disk space stores downloaded files. A model family contains related releases whose files can differ in size, license and format.
Qwen 2.5 family records compare listed files and link to each model. For one concrete example, inspect Qwen3-8B exact file names and hashes and its run-readiness record. The verification policy explains what file checks mean. A fit estimate is not a runtime test.

Key facts
- Desktop app
- Installed locally; each model file is a separate download with its own hash check.
- Checked label
- Means bytes matched a published SHA-256 on this computer; not a safety guarantee.
- Fit estimate
- Compares file size to memory; it is not a measured run or speed promise.
- Service status
- /status reports site probes; it does not diagnose your local runtime.
Evidence you can inspect (plain text)
- /finder narrows catalog candidates; each choice still needs its file record inspected.
- /family/qwen2.5 links related models with recorded sizes.
- Open /artifact/hf-model-qwen-qwen3-8b/files for model exact filenames, availability and any recorded SHA-256.
- Open /evidence/artifacts/hf-model-qwen-qwen3-8b for run-readiness evidence tied to that record; absent receipts stay unmeasured.
- Open /api/artifacts/hf-model-qwen-qwen3-8b/card.md for machine-readable source facts (not a runtime test).
- Fit estimates on the site are planning aids, not measured run receipts.
Unmeasured states are stated explicitly; this page does not invent run scores or compatibility guarantees.
Which date applies to which fact
- Committed page-copy sources:
- Upstream model metadata: Dates on artifact records when shown; not implied by page-copy revision
- Run receipts: Only on /evidence pages when recorded; otherwise unmeasured
Page-copy revision (Updated line above) identifies committed text sources, not upstream model edits or test outcomes.
- Open Discover. Turn on For chatting if you only want chat models.
- Turn on Fits my computer to hide files the app thinks are too large for this machine.
- Open a model. Read size, fit estimate, and license. Prefer a smaller file when you are unsure.
- If chat later stops with a memory error, pick a smaller model or use Fix common problems.
More
Memory is working space while the model runs, not the same as disk space for the download. On the website, Set my machine on a model page gives a separate estimate with its own assumptions. Passing either check does not guarantee a successful load.
Common questions
What does Fits my computer mean?
The app compares the on-disk file size with total memory on this computer. A file fits when it is no more than 60% of that memory.
Does fitting mean it will be fast?
No. A fit check is not a speed promise. Smaller models usually reply faster.
